Kipushi residents ‘import’ water from DRC

JACK ZIMBA, Mushindamo
RESIDENTS of Kipushi in the newly-created Mushindamo district are forced to draw water from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) because the water pumps on the Zambian side have broken down.

Young Congolese men and boys have taken advantage of this to ferry water in 20-litre containers using bicycles across the border. They sell the water to Zambians for K2 or K3 each.
The water mules carry up to 10 containers of the precious commodity on rickety bicycles.
