Kapona goes for FAZ presidency

STEPHEN PHIRI, Lusaka
DIVISION One (South) Matero United life member Solomon Kapona yesterday announced his candidature for the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) presidency.
The association will go to the polls next year.
Kapona said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that Zambian football needs a visionary administrator to steer it to higher heights.
He said football standards have plummeted to the lowest standards since Zambia won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.
Kapona joins former FAZ executive committee member Henschel Chitembeya who recently announced that he would challenge incumbent president Kalusha Bwalya.
“I have seen a lot of wrongs with the way our football is run. I want to correct the situation,” said the former Kabwe Warriors and Zambia striker.
Kapona also had a stint with Botswana sides LCS Gunners and Nico United.
He alleged that FAZ lacks distinct strategies to embrace inclusiveness and that the association is adamant with the reintroduction of the National Football League (NFL).
Kapona said the NFL will be involved in the running of all the leagues while the FAZ secretariat will oversee various national teams.
Kapona was disqualified from running for the FAZ top job in 2008 because he did not meet the requirements.
