Kalombo, Ng’andwe win Top 16 tourney

SEED four Kalombo Mulenga on Saturday put up a stunning performance to win the Top 16 Badminton Championship at Central Sports Club in Lusaka.
Kalombo defied hierarchy beating seed two Chongo Ngosa 21-18, 17-21, 26- 24 in a tightly contested semi-final to set a final date against his elder brother Chongo.
Chongo, who was the top seed, also sweated for victory in the other semi-final edging Donald Mabo 22-17, 19-21, 21-18.
In the final, Kalombo defied odds beating Chongo 2-0.
Kalombo won the first set 15-13 and was leading in the second set 21-13 when Chongo retired with an injury.
And Miyambo Ng’andwe took advantage of the absence of the Siamupangila sisters Olga and Evelyn to win the women’s category.
Ng’andwe had an easy tournament beating Elizabeth Chipeleme in straight sets 21-15, 21-17 in the final.
In the semi-finals, Miyambo edged Mary Chilambwe 21-11, 21-7 while Chipeleme beat Naomi Ng’andwe 21-11, 18- 21, 21-19.
Juma Muwowo and Ngosa Chongo were declared men’s doubles champions.
The duo was leading 16-10 over Donald Mabo and Topsy Phiri when a power failure occurred.
Badminton Zambia technical chairman Kenny Sevile described this year’s tournament as highly competitive.
