Kalengo upsets Chilambwe, win Midlands Open

ROBINSON KUNDA, Lusaka
SEED Three Kundanji Kalengo on Sunday put up a spirited performance upsetting top seed Manda Chilambwe to win the Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZSIC) General Insurance Midlands Open Squash Championship at Lusaka Club.
And in the ladies category, Sharon Chimfwembe eased past Monica Chimese to retain the Midlands Open title.
Kalengo, who is based in South Africa, won 11-4, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 to continue his dominance over his former mentor having defeated Chilambwe in the Judge Lloyd Siame tournament in Ndola last year.
Kalengo was full of confidence beating Chilambwe 11-4 in the first set but the latter fought back to claim the second set 11-8 and looked set to defend the title when he went on to win the third set 11-7.
Chilambwe, who spent most of the time arguing with the referee, became frustrated and made comical errors.
“I am so excited. It feels great to beat the number one,” Kalengo, who is a nephew to former Zambian top seed Robby Lingashi, said.
Chilambwe said: “I am very disappointed, I lost concentration. Anyway congratulations to Kundanji.”
Kalengo received K5, 000 while Chilambwe pocketed K3, 700.
And Chimfwembe retained her title without struggling after defeating Chimese 11-3, 11-9, 11-8.
Minister of Youth and Sport Vincent Mwale hailed ZSIC General Insurance for pumping K50, 000 into the tournament.
Mwale said Government will give equal support to all sports disciplines.
