Kalaba, Mutale win titles

SEED one Jackson Kalaba yesterday won the inaugural Cavmont Bank Under-25 National Tennis Championship after edging seed three Luwanga Lumbeta 2-1 in a tightly contested final at Lusaka Club.
And top seed Maggie Mutale beat seed three Priscilla Mayuka 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to win the women’s category.
Lumbeta, who caused an upset in the semi-final beating seed two Frichard Mulenga 6-3, 7-5, gave Kalaba a good run for his money.
The top seed took the first set 6-2 before going down 1-6 in the second set and managed to break the deadlock in the final set winning 6-3 in the final that lasted over two hours.
Kalaba and Mutale each walked away with K1,100 while Lumbeta and Mayuka pocketed K800 each.
“It was tough but I expected this win. I am very happy that I am the inaugural champion for the Cavmont Bank Championship,” Kalaba said.
In the men’s doubles, Kalaba paired with Charles Chiwena and beat Alex Mvula and Peter Theo 3-1 to pocket K1,000 each.
Cavmont Bank, which has committed to sponsor the tournament for the next three years, pumped in K12,500 towards this year’s event.
