Kafue to host 16 days activism against GBV commemorations

MWAPE MWENYA, Lusaka
THE Ministry of Gender will this year hold the commemoration of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence in Kafue district in an effort to have as many participants as possible.
Gender rights protection deputy director Simon Kapilima said in an interview that the national event will be commemorated under the theme; Orange the world, raise money to end violence against women and girls.
The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence is commemorated from November 25 to December 10 annually.
The international campaign originated from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute co-ordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.
“Our decision to take the event to Kafue is to reach out to people in other areas other than Lusaka. This way it will help in spreading awareness on the dangers of gender based violence,” Mr Kapilima said.
He said the programme will be characterised with a march past and other educative entertainment activities such as drama to sensitise the people against gender-based violence.
Mr Kapilima said organisations wishing to participate in the commemoration will be required to wear orange attires in response to this year`s theme.
“It is mandatory for everyone to wear orange and also brand their products in the same colour as they partake in the commemoration. This year, we want to ensure that many people take part in the commemoration in an effort to eliminate gender -based violence,” he said.
Mr Kapilima said organisations that will participate in the programme will be required to showcase their activities in fighting GBV and also to promote gender impartiality.
