Kafue rioters appear in court

CAROLINE KALOMBE, Lusaka
THIRTY-FIVE people that were arrested in Kafue for allegedly participating in a riot that left one person dead and two police posts burnt, yesterday appeared before the Kafue Magistrate’s Court on charges of riotous behaviour and Arson.
Before magistrate Annie Mbewe was Bright Mukanyo and 34 others who pleaded not guilty to the two charges.
The 35 said they understood the charges, but denied committing the offences.
They were arrested after being identified as part of a mob that burnt a fire tender and two police posts in protest against a marketeer who was knocked down by a police officer.
The residents of Kafue’s Zambia township ran amok in the early hours of last Friday after a police officer knocked down a woman and left her with serious injuries.
They are alleged to have burnt down eight motor vehicles that they found at Lumumba and Mthendere police posts when the officer in question ran to the police in fear of the mob.
Among the vehicles burnt was a fire tender which was being used to quench the fire that had erupted.
The injured woman was identified as Ireen Kaluba, 49, who is admitted to Kafue District Hospital.
