Inside Mukobeko Maximum

MUKOBEKO Maximum Correctional Facility.

IT IS Christmas Eve, and as I’m ushered into Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility in Kabwe, through its high, heavy metal gates, I hear unexpected sounds – whistle blowing, bouncing ball and men shouting.
Between the thick iron bars on the gate, I see inmates playing soccer on a dusty pitch in the middle section of the prison as part of their Christmas celebration.
They are cheered on by fellow inmates in orange prison uniforms.
I had travelled to the maximum facility to meet one prisoner on death row, and another, whose sentence was recently commuted from death to 20 years.
For me, there was also something personal about my visit to the maximum prison. I was returning here for the first time after more than 30 years.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
