‘Include guidance, counselling in learning institutions’

KALUNGA MUSONDA, Kabwe
DEPUTY Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Sydney Mushanga has called for the strengthening of guidance and counselling departments in learning institutions.
Mr Mushanga said guidance and counselling will help to reduce pregnancies and cases of suicide among learners.
“Many children come from different homes and they face different situations, and this is why it is important that the schools are offered counselling services,” Mr Mushanga said.
He said in an interview that counselling helps children to break the silence in cases of physical and emotional abuse in homes and communities.
He said some children underperform because of the different challenges they face in respective homes.
He said Government has started making efforts towards the revival of the guidance and counselling departments at all levels of education.
“Education is the key to a bright future of our children, and learners need all the guidance and counselling they can get to understand the importance of education,” he said.
Mr Mushanga appealed to provincial education officers in Central Province to expedite the strengthening of guidance and counselling departments in learning institutions.
