House to keep convict

DESPITE being convicted of criminal offences, Sesheke Member of Parliament (MP) Romeo Kang’ombe (UPND) will remain a lawmaker because his sentence is suspended, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini ruled yesterday.On Tuesday, Deputy Government Chief Whip Tutwa Ngulube rose on a point of order asking if Mr Kang’ombe (UPND) was in right to continue being in the House after being convicted of assault and abducting two police officers.However, the Speaker reserved ruling to a later date to enable him to make a measured decision.In his ruling yesterday, Dr Matibini said although convicted of criminal offences, the Sesheke legislator cannot vacate the office of MP because he has not been imprisoned.“Therefore, he has not vacated his seat and remains Member of Parliament for Sesheke constituency unless and until such a time that he violates the conditions attached to CLICK TO READ MORE
