Help Lungu develop Zambia, minister urges Chipata municipality

DARLINGTON MWENDABAI, Chipata
MINISTER of Local Government and Housing John Phiri has appealed to Chipata Municipal Council to support the leadership of President Lungu especially that the country was going to the polls next year.
He said God has raised Mr Lungu because he is humble and is driving the country in the right direction.
Dr Phiri who was speaking on Friday when he addressed council workers in the chambers also warned against the illegal allocation of land.
Dr Phiri said the era of indiscrimination when giving out land and creating slums is gone because the country is moving towards creating modern cities with better houses.
The minister is in Eastern Province to visit councils and projects such as the urban roads and markets.
“The President (Lungu) has already hinted that Chipata and other three districts will be declared cities by 2016 but council workers and councillors should stop dishing out land and creating slums,” he said.
He said unnecessary transfers will not be entertained in councils instead erring workers will be dealt with where an offence has occurred.
He said there is no need to transfer a problem from one council to another warning that those who refuse to change will be dismissed.
He also warned that workers who engage in partisan politics will be fired. These workers should not be in politics at the expense of offering a service to the people.
Dr Phiri said the decentralisation policy entails workers needing to academically upgrade themselves to be relevant to the institution.
He said Government is improving the lives of people by constructing urban roads and improving water and sanitation.
