Government collects K800,000 for underpaid workers

Government complex.

GOVERNMENT has recovered about K800,000 over the past two weeks, on behalf of underpaid workers, from employers who failed to comply with new minimum wages.
Labour Commissioner Chanda Kaziya said in an interview yesterday that the response from some employers has been impressive although there are still a few challenges.
“In the last two weeks, we managed to recover K800,000 on behalf of employees and records are there. They [workers] reported to the labour office about the challenges they are facing and we made a follow-up,” he said.
Mr Kaziya could, however, not disclose names of the affected employers.
He urged workers to continue reporting any cases of abuse from their employers.
