Germany salutes Lungu, Zambia

VIOLET MENGO, Lusaka
GERMAN President Joachim Gauck has commended Zambia for its “exemplary” development and democracy.
In a message of congratulations to President Lungu on Zambia’s 51 years of political independence, President Gauck said since attaining independence over half a century ago, Zambia has developed in an exemplary manner thanks to the peaceful co-existence of numerous ethnic and religious groups, freedom of religion and the Zambian tradition of democratic handovers of political power.
“On the occasion of independence day in the Republic of Zambia, allow me to offer you and the people of your country my sincere congratulations and those of my fellow Germans,” President Gauck said.
He said the generous hospitality which Zambia extends to refugees from its neighbouring countries sends an important signal, particularly at this point in time.
“Rest assured that Germany will continue to stand by your country and its citizens as a firm friend and reliable partner,” he said.
