Gerald, 2 others Dakar-bound

UNITED States of America-based sprinter Gerald Phiri and two others have been invited to compete at this weekend’s Dakar World Challenge in Senegal.
The other two runners, who will race in the event slated for May 23 are Youth Olympic gold medallist Sydney Siame and 200 metres specialist Titus Kafunda.
Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) international relations and communications manager Davison Mung’ambata said in a press statement yesterday that the athletes’ outing has been sponsored by the local organising committee through the German cooperation programme.
Mung’ambata said the event is very important because it will be used as a qualifier for the Congo Brazzaville All-Africa Games and the Beijing World Championship.
He said Siame and Kafunda will leave for Dakar today.
“This is the output of the strategic implementation programme (STRIP) launched by ZAAA and the German cooperation in 2013 to prepare and develop local athletes to higher competition levels and eventually become professional runners who will be  able to win medals for Zambia at the highest level,” he said.
Mung’ambata said the STRIP also takes care of the carding system that was implemented to identify local talent through competitions.
He said the STRIP is also used to put the identified athletes on various developmental programmes according to their age groups.
