NANCY MWAPE, Livingstone
FRENCH President Francois Hollande has commended Zambia for helping to maintain harmony and restoring peace in the Central African Republic (CAR) through peace-keeping missions.
Mr Hollande said this on Monday when Zambia’s Ambassador to France Humphrey Chibanda presented his letters of credence.
Mr Hollande said France and Zambia enjoy cordial relations and commened Zambia’s efforts in maintaining peace and stability in Africa.
He also commended Zambia for the strides made in developing the economy and assured Mr Chibanda of France’s support in economic development.
“France is working towards balancing up relations between the Francophone and Anglophone countries in Africa and thus the renewed interest in countries such as Zambia,” Mr Hollande said.
And Mr Chibanda said France and Zambia, though separated by long distance, have continued to enjoy warm and cordial relations since Zambia attained independence 50 years ago.
He promised to continue developing and strengthening the already existing bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
Mr Chibanda also recognised the pivotal role played by France in promoting and maintaining peace and security in international affairs with particular emphasis on the African continent.
“Zambia, like France, has remained one of the countries in Africa that is committed to good governance, upholding of democratic principles and respect for human rights,” he said.
Mr Chibanda said Zambia has continued to be a pioneer of dialogue in countries which have been faced with conflicts on the African continent.
He said Zambia and France have enjoyed good bilateral economic relations, which has resulted in over 20 French companies investing in various sectors of the economy.
He commended France’s bilateral support to Zambia in the fields of water, energy and infrastructure.
Mr Chibanda also called on French visitors to explore Zambia’s tourism potential.
“France is the world leader in tourism visitors receiving over 80 million tourists annually. Given Zambia’s tourism potential, I will vigorously pursue to learn how France has continued to remain at the top in terms of tourism visitor numbers,” Mr Chibanda said.
