FRA maize target unlikely

STEVEN MVULA, Parliament
THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) may not meet its target of buying 500,000 metric tonnes of maize this marketing season, Parliament heard yesterday.
With only two weeks remaining before the maize marketing season is closed, FRA has purchased only 166,831 metric tonnes of maize against the 500,000 target, representing 33.4 percent.
Minister of Agriculture Michael Katambo, however, assured the House that the country has enough carry-over maize stocks at 953,090 metric tonnes to guarantee national food security.
He said FRA has 479,727 metric tonnes of maize from previous and current stocks while grain traders and millers have 473,343 metric tonnes.
