Forest licence issuance suspended

FOREST

STEVEN MVULA, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT has suspended the issuance and renewal of forest concession licences with immediate effect.
The suspension is to facilitate the review of the old regulation and develop other regulations in order to enhance sustainable management of the forest resource.
Minister of Lands, Natural Resources and Environment Protection Christabel Ngimbu made the announcement at a press briefing yesterday.
“In order to ensure a coordinated process of reviewing the regulations, my ministry has suspended the issuance and renewal of forest concession licences with immediate effect until the new regulations and procedures are completed,” Ms Ngimbu said.
Ms Ngimbu said her ministry has started streamlining the procedures for regulating, monitoring and managing forestry activities in order to align them to the current Act.
Ms Ngimbu said her ministry has started working on the new regulations among them statutory instrument number 94 of 2015 on export of timber regulation.
“I urge all stakeholders to submit ideas on the proposed implementation procedures on matters of interest within the new forest Act,” she said.
Ms Ngimbu said the Forests Act has a number of new features that address emerging issues in the forest sector.
She said the new features in the Forests Act will require regulations to operationalise the Act hence the need to review and develop subsidiary regulation.
