AT THE opening of the University of Zambia (UNZA), the first-ever university in the country, in 1966, then Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere was the keynote speaker.
In introducing Nyerere, President Kenneth Kaunda broke down as he described the neglect of education by the colonial government.
He reminisced how, after his father’s death, Lubwa Mission refused to enrol him because his mother did not have two shillings and six pence fee.
It took about 20 minutes before Dr Kaunda could compose himself and finish the speech.
But when Nyerere took over to give his speech, he kind of broke the ice.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
