Dear editor,
The influx of imported good second-hand cars from Japan has made mobility easy for many Zambians.
It is no wonder almost all civil servants own a car because it is now a necessity unlike those days when owning a car was for prestigious reasons.
Workers manage to go for work between districts with ease. This influx has put pressure on our roads, hence the construction of ring roads in Lusaka is a welcome move.
The pressure is not only on roads but also on filling stations, which are dotted all over the city.
However, this is not so with the Great East Road stretch between Nyimba and Chongwe. This stretch is over 200kms but has no service station. Motorists along this route depend on black market fuel from call boys under the trees.
These motorists risk the safety of their cars as they don’t know how safe the fuel is more so that it is kept in dirty containers. It is not only the cars which are at risk but also the lives of the traders in case of fire as they conduct their business with no fire extinguishers in sight.
In addition, these dealers conduct their trade under trees near markets or schools. Can someone please entice investors to set a filling station in the newly-created district of Rufunsa as this is the central point between Nyimba and Chongwe.
