Farmers should own farming system

ZAMBIA National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) has advised farmers to come up with their own maize pricing mechanism which is profitable.
ZNFU media and public relations manager Calvin Kaleyi said the pricing mechanism should not be below farmers’ full cost recovery of production.
In an interview on Monday, Mr Kaleyi said while Food Reserve Agency (FRA) sets its price for buying maize, farmers should not wait for the agency.
Currently, Government no longer sets the floor price of maize and allows FRA and other market players to determine the price. Last year, FRA was buying a 50 kilogramme (kg), of maize at K60.
He, however, advised farmers to exercise restraint when selling their produce by being wary of traders who are likely to offer lower prices.
