Expose labour-related injustices, media urged

MINISTER of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda has urged the media to expose labour-related injustices on workers to ensure effective implementation of the amended Employment Act number 15 of 2015.
In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Shamenda said the media as the fourth estate should be fully engaged in ensuring that workers’ conditions are improved by highlighting all the exploitation being perpetrated.
“The media is very important in supporting Government and stakeholders’ policies by highlighting both the good and bad practices from employers. By doing so, it will serve as a wake-up call for the employers to always ensure workers’ conditions are upheld,” Mr Shamenda said.
He said for the effective implementation of the recently amended law, the individual (worker) must be very vigilant and ensure that they are not exploited in any way.
Mr Shamenda said workers that are exploited by their employers should report their cases through the right channels and appropriate action will be taken.
He also appealed to the workers’ unions to protect their members by negotiating with employers for better conditions of service.
“Our role as a ministry will be very critical as the custodian of the law to ensure that all reported cases are worked on and no ‘sacred cow’ in the implementation of the Employment Act will be left out,” Mr Shamenda said.
He said the enactment of the amendment to the Employment Law number 15 is in accordance with the promise the Patriotic Front made to the people of Zambia to carry out a comprehensive review and amendment of labour-related legislation.
“We also promised the people to review the employment Act so as to introduce clear legal provisions that will govern casualisation of labour and outsourcing of services,” Mr Shamenda said.
He appealed to all employers to abide by the laws and ensure workers enjoy good conditions of service.
President Lungu assented to the amendment Bill on November 26, 2015 and it was published into law on December 3, 2015.
