Ex-goalie Banda backs Zesco to conquer

ZESCO United

STEPHEN PHIRI, BENEDICT TEMBO, Lusaka

DESPITE being written off as nowhere near legendary status by rivals Nkana and Mufulira Wanderers, former Zesco United goalkeeper Jacob Banda believes the Ndola giants have the arsenal to match the Kitwe side’s haul of 13 league crowns and surpassing it. In the last 14 years, Zesco have won nine Super League titles while Nkana have managed two, in 2013 and 2020. After beating NAPSA Stars 2-0 in a Super League match in Ndola on Sunday, Zesco equalled Wanderers’ record of nine. “Within the next four years, Zesco can break Nkana’s record because at the rate the team is playing, the future is bright,” Banda said. Banda, who has won nine league titles with Zesco, said veterans such as skipper John Ching’andu, Winston Kalengo and Jesse Were have gelled well with upcoming players like Enock Sakala Jnr, Samuel Sikaonga, John Chishimba and Chanda Mukuka, among others. Banda also said he will say goodbye to Zesco fans during the season closing match against Buildcon. “I have been at Zesco for 16 years and I want to say goodbye to them by playing in the last match against Buildcon,” the 33-year-old, who has hanged up his boots, said. “The fans have been good to me.” Banda was part of the Zesco squad that reached the 2016 CAF Champions League semi-finals. He also lifted the Coca-Cola Cup, ABSA Cup, BP Top Eight and Mosi Cup trophies, among others, with Zesco. Banda also CLICK TO READ MORE
