Establish schools to prevent accidents, mines urged

CHIEF Government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili has urged mining houses to establish training schools to equip miners with the necessary skills in mining to prevent fatal mine accidents.
Mr Kambwili, who is Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, observed that most mining houses employ people who lack the necessary skills and expertise to work as miners.
“Most people who work in the mines do not undergo any formal training before starting employment. It is usually job-on-training and this is the reason why we have so many fatal mine accidents in these mines,” he said.
Mr Kambwili was speaking in Mufulira on Friday when he toured the Mopani Central Training Centre (MCTC), which was built by Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) at a cost of US$21 million.
He said investing in training schools can help mining houses to have a skilled workforce which can contribute effectively to increasing their productivity.
Mr Kambwili said mine accidents can be avoided if mining houses channel more of their resources towards training programmes aimed at enhancing the skills of the miners.
He commended MCM for building a modern training school which even has a dummy of an underground mine to help the trainees have experience of what really happens in the mines.
Mr Kambwili urged mining companies to emulate what MCM has done by establishing training schools that will help to impart knowledge to Zambians about mining.
He said MCM is also investing in technological advancements to ensure that communication in its mines is enhanced to safeguard the lives of the people.
And Mr Kambwili said Government is concerned about the job losses happening in the mines as a result of global economic challenges.
“What is happening in the mines is really a concern to us as well. If people lose jobs in the mines, we are also affected because it means a reduction in revenue collected,” he said.
And MCTC training and development manager Lourens de Klerk said the training school equips trainees with different skills in mining.
