DRC humiliate hapless Zambia

STEPHEN PHIRI, Brazzaville
THE Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) handball team on Thursday humiliated Zambia in an All-Africa Games Group D match at Concorde Sports Complex.
Zambia had little to offer and coach Gaston Mulubwa conceded defeat.
It was a one-way traffic as the Congolese led 21-5 at half-time.
While Mulubwa fielded a youthful side, DRC went for experience and it paid off.
Christiane Mwasesa scored nine times, while Constance Louoba and Lydia Musonda netted seven goals apiece.
Feza Mwange accounted for five, Kalenda Milemba, Clemence Matutu and Carine Babina hit the net four times apiece.
Averthy Loemba, Mathilde Bambi and Jeannette Okoko managed three goals each while Aurelie Luhaka was on target once for DRC to win 51-10.
Zambia hit back through Ruth Mbewe’s four goals, while Moria Kamfwa and Majory Mbewe netted twice apiece.
Elizabeth Gondwe and Royce Ngwira managed a goal each.
Mulubwa attributed the defeat to inexperience.
“This is the time the girls are playing at the All-Africa Games. Most of the DRC players play in Angola and Europe and are exposed,” he said.
Mulubwa said the DRC is a handball powerhouse on the continent.
He also said his players were slow to recover when they lost possession but were quick in attack.
Mulubwa said the technical bench will work on the flaws ahead of today’s clash against Ivory Coast.
