Diversify economy, urges British envoy

THE British government has pledged to support Zambia to diversify its economy to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on copper.
Speaking in an interview in Lusaka, British High Commissioner to Zambia Fergus Cochrane-Dyet Obe said diversification of the economy is very important because it is not good for Zambia to be too dependent on copper.
“One day, Zambia should not be receiving aid; it won’t be necessary. So, the United Kingdom wants to help Zambia to achieve that and that is why the aid we are giving increasingly is directed towards economic development rather than health and education as a traditional factor,” he said.
Mr Obe said Zambia has enormous potential in agriculture, tourism and energy and that the UK will do anything possible to help the country improve these sectors.
