Divas to rock comedy stage

NKOLE NKOLE, Lusaka
THERE has never been a comedy show in Zambia that featured a strictly female line-up, but that is about to change.
To mark the occasion of International Women’s Day this year, a show dubbed the Diva Comedy Show is being hosted by Chibwe Katebe, who was last Sunday elected as the Comedians Association of Zambia (CAZ) chairman, at the Lusaka Playhouse.
The show will take place on the eve of Women’s Day.
Chibwe told the Weekend Mail in Lusaka that there have been female comedians in the industry for quite a while now but they have mainly been in the background because the male comedians have always dominated performances particularly as stand-up comics.
“It is going to be a show strictly featuring female comedians so it will be a night for the ladies,” he said.
The line-up includes the comedians Theresa, Nelly, Anne, Anita, Mutale and Adess, as well as the Copperbelt-based Sekanayo.
Previously, although being part of the Zambia One Comedy group, these comedians mainly featured in comedy skits.
Chibwe admitted such a show was long overdue hence the decision to honour the female comedians by giving the stage entirely to them.
Chibwe was last Sunday elected chairman of CAZ, replacing Bob Nkosha, who had led the committee in an interim capacity.
The association was formed in 2012 and encompasses almost all comedians in Zambia
It exists to coordinate, regulate and give a playing ground to comedians in Zambia while also being affiliated to the National Arts Council (NAC).
