Criminalise hate speech, Veep urges Parliament

ZAMBIA’S law on hate speech is weak and lawmakers should consider criminalising the legislation because it can lead to civil strife if left unchecked, Vice-President Inonge Wina told Parliament yesterday.
Mrs Wina said there is need to amend the law on hate speech to strengthen it and protect the image of the country.
She was responding to Kabwe Central Member of Parliament (MP) Tutwa Ngulube (PF) during the Vice-President’s question time.
Mr Ngulube wanted to know if Government has plans to prosecute people spreading xenophobic messages against foreigners, investors and other Zambians of different tribes from hate speech perpetrators.
