Court sentences man to 30 years

THE Livingstone High Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to 30 years imprisonment with hard labour for being part of a gang that raped a woman in Mazabuka.
This is a case in which Griffin Mwela of Mazabuka was charged with rape.
On May 28 last year in Mazabuka, Mwela jointly and while acting together with other unknown people, had sex with a woman without her consent.
When the matter came up for judgment, Mwela through Legal Aid Board lawyer Martin Mankika, made an application that he retakes plea because he did not understand the charge as he initially had no legal representation.
“I have instructions from my client that he wants to retake plea. He informed me that he did not understand the offence which he was charged with,” he said.
