Chembe gets $7m mine

LUAPULA Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has launched the construction of a US$7 million manganese mine in Chembe district.
Mr Chilangwa said the initial construction of the project, which will include

upgrading of 21kms of road leading to the mine, will create about 60 jobs.
He said in an interview yesterday that once completed, the mine, which is being set up by a company called MMRP, will create about 200 jobs for the local people.
Mr Chilangwa said MMRP plans to establish a manganese-processing plant as soon as there is enough electricity supply to the region.
He said the project, whose first phase is upgrading of over 20kms of roads and bridges, is expected to be completed in 12 months.
“About 21kms of roads from Kundamfumu leading to the mine will be upgraded at a cost of K1million.
“This is a very good development because the area is an agricultural hub, and farmers will benefit because they will be transporting their produce on a renovated road,” Mr Chilangwa said.
He said the launch of the project is in line with Government’s industrialisation and job creation agenda aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
