By HONE SIAME
A MINER of JCHX, a company engaged by Non-Ferrous Corporation Africa (NFCA) Chambishi Mine, has died in a rockfall.
Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) general secretary Joseph Chewe said on Saturday that Richard Chilembo, 41, of Chingola died on Friday.
Mr Chewe said the accident happened around 04:00 hours and that another miner was injured.
He said the injured miner was rushed to Kitwe’s Sinozam Hospital where he was treated and discharged.
Mr Chewe said MUZ is saddened by the death of Mr Chilembo and the fatalities recorded in mine accidents.
“Mr Chilembo died due to a rockfall. As MUZ, we regret the death of Mr Chilembo and we would like to send our message of condolences to his family,” Mr Chewe said.
He called on mining companies to put in place adequate safety measures to reduce fatalities in the industry.
Mr Chewe also urged the Mines Safety Department (MSD) under the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development to conduct regular underground mine inspections to ensure mining companies adhere to safety standards.
