Chalimbana hostel block gutted

KELVIN CHONGO, Lusaka
FIRE yesterday swept through a hostel block at Chalimbana University in Chongwe destroying property worth thousands of Kwacha.
Chongwe district commissioner Frazier Musonda, who was at the university monitoring the situation, said in an interview that fire swept through the University’s block M.
Chongwe district council had difficulties quenching the fire as there was no water at the university.
Mr Musonda said in the absence of water and fire tenders, students used sand to try and stop the fire from spreading, but the effort was in vain.
The fire is believed to have started from the common room of the hostel and students watched helplessly as they waited for the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) and Lusaka City Council fire tenders as the block went up in flames.
First fire tenders from ZAF arrived at the university around 18:30 hours.
