Build more hostels for rural female pupils – Phiri

THERE are many cases of child marriages that take place in Nakonde district without the knowledge of relevant authorities. This vice has forced many girls to drop out of school.

MOVEMENT For Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Mkaika member of Parliament Peter Phiri has called on Government to consider building more hostels for girls in rural boarding schools to prevent them from dropping out of school.
Mr Phiri said accommodation for girls in rural schools is a challenge that needs urgent response if a girl child education in the country is to improve.
“Most of our girls in boarding secondary schools rent accommodation in the nearby villages, this has greatly contributed to early pregnancy as there are no restrictions or security. Some walk long distances to and from school and this causes them to drop out of school,” he said.
