‘Be wary of young people’s behaviour during festivities’

SAVE The Children Zambia has called on local authorities and the Zambia Police Service to intensify patrols in bars and nightclubs to ensure that owners adhere to guidelines, especially with regard to underage patrons. Organisation country director Jo Musonda said the festive season comes with challenges as regards the protection and vulnerability of children.
She said this being the case, Save The Children is urging parents, guardians, churches and civil society organisations to be vigilant in ensuring that children are protected during this period. “We are aware that most people drop their guard and get carried away with the festivities, forgetting that there are criminal elements and child abusers who would like to take advantage of this period and abuse children,” Ms Musonda said. She has called on parents and guardians to ensure that children have a trusted adult escorting them to various places as they celebrate. Ms Musonda also cautioned guardians to remember that not all close family members mean well when they invite children to festivity celebrations. She added that parents must ensure that they put in place safety measures if they (parents/guardians) will allow children to spend the celebrations elsewhere.
