Challenge Cup due to club commitments.
National team coach Wedson Nyirenda yesterday named 22 players for the COSAFA tournament and dropped goalkeeper Charles Mweemba, defenders Given Sinyangwe, Eric Chomba, midfielder Paul Katema, and strikers Conlyde Luchanga and Musonda Mwape.
Under-20 defenders Solomon Sakala and Moses Nyondo have made the cut.
Nyirenda has also called another under-20 defender, Muchindu Muchindu, to reinforce the squad as Zambia seeks a record fifth COSAFA tile.
He has also summoned South Africa-based midfielder Salulani Phiri.
Nyirenda said Banda has been given chance to settle at his new club, KV Oostende.
“We have left Musonda Mwape because he has a knock. We won’t rush him because we want him to heal completely and Emmanuel Banda has also been ruled out because we want him to concentrate on his new club [KV Oostende],” Nyirenda said.
Banda on Monday joined Oostende from Portuguese outfit Sporting Club Esmoritz on a three-year deal
Zambia will tackle Botswana in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Rustenburg.
He has declared the Chipolopolo ready for battle.
“The team is ready. Some of the mistakes we saw today [yesterday] will be rectified on Friday [tomorrow],” he said.
And Football Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga expects the Chipolopolo to lift the trophy to restore the pride of the team.
Kamanga urged the Chipolopolo to conquer the region.
“We do not expect excuses, whether we use different teams, it is still Zambia. We must win the COSAFA Cup to restore the pride of the senior national team,” he said.
