I am back to my roots – Katongo Tembo

ZAMBIAN-born but British-bred singer and songwriter Katongo Tembo, who has enjoyed considerable success abroad, is in the country and is set to record with some local artistes as well as try and stamp her foothold locally.
Katongo, who has worked with JK on a song titled Joy which was recorded at Digital X, is set to enter the studio to record another song with rapper Ice Queen Cleo.
“I’m basically here to try and introduce myself to the Zambian audience. My music has done relatively well elsewhere but I thought it important to reconnect with my roots. My sound is what I would call Afro-pop; I like dance and fast-paced rhythms. I also love the mellowness in reggae,” she says.
Although it was mainly in 2012 and 2013 that Katongo enjoyed success in England with songs like Tonight and So Good, she started writing poems at about the age of 11 as a way of expressing herself.
“I started mainly through writing poetry as a way of expressing myself, by the age of 18; I was in studios providing vocals to those who needed them.”
It is perhaps no surprise then that last year, she was a winner of the UK Songwriting Contest for writing the song Make A Change, an inspiring reggae track about finding strength within oneself to make a positive change to the world.
She has now signed her first music writing deal with UK Publishing Company Speegra Music UK.
It has been an exciting time for Katongo who has also garnered praise from the likes of Simon Cowell who featured and recognised her as a top talent in his ‘You Generation’ talent search.
Her music video Tonight peaked at number 17 on Oljo, the popular online German Music Video Chart, ahead of the likes of Calvin Harris, Ne-Yo and David Guetta while her latest single with JK peaked at number seven on the Beat 99 FM Radio Nigeria and Naija 102 Fm Radio.
Away from singing, Katongo is also an international model and has appeared in international music videos and Adverts as well as beauty and entertainment magazines such as Cocogal UK, Poize magazine Nigeria, Promota magazine and EZM.
