African countries’ dismal performance at World Cup sad

Dear editor,
SINCE inception of the World Cup, no African team has won the coveted trophy, let alone reached the semi-final stage. And the 2018 FIFA Russia World Cup football tournament, where the continent was being represented by Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia, is no exception.
All the four countries with an exception of Senegal lost their opening matches. Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia lost their first matches to Uruguay, Iran, Croatia and England. Senegal, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, beat Poland 2-1 and this result made Africa proud.
It is one thing to participate at the World Cup and another to perform well. The performance of African envoys at the 2018 Russia World Cup is not impressive with all the five eliminated in the first round.
There was hope on Nigeria and Senegal to progress to the knock-out stage but losses to Argentina and Colombia (2-1, 1-0) undid them. It was more painful for Senegal, who had four points at par with Japan but fell out on fair play rule for having accumulated six yellow cards against the Asian country’s four.
In view of the aforegone, there is need for African countries to invest so much in infrastructures such as the stadia and they should improve their standard of play. Otherwise the World Cup will continue eluding Africa.
All the best to the remaining teams at the World Cup and may the best team win the trophy at the end of the tournament.
