ZAMBIA has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027-2029 term, marking a significant milestone in the country’s multilateral diplomacy.

The election yesterday by the UN General Assembly at the ongoing 81st Session at the UN headquarters, is also a landmark in the country’s long-standing commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe said the election also reinforces President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision in the Government’s Grow Zambia Agenda, which places people at the centre of development.

Mr Haimbe said the President’s agenda also recognises that economic progress must go hand in hand with the protection of fundamental rights, inclusive opportunities and improved livelihoods.

“President Hichilema has consistently positioned Zambia as a beacon of peace and stability and a champion for fundamental freedoms,” he said in a statement.

He said the election presents Zambia with an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the global human rights agenda and strengthening international cooperation.

The country will also use the platform to advance the principles of human dignity, equality, justice, democracy and the rule of law.

During the tenure, Zambia will seek to promote constructive dialogue, cooperation and consensus among member states, while contributing to a more effective, inclusive and responsive Human Rights Council.

“The country will champion the rights of women, children and vulnerable groups such as the disabled, advance the right to development, and strengthen the links between human rights, climate resilience and sustainable development,” Mr Haimbe said.

He said Zambia’s election further presents an opportunity for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights at home.

Mr Haimbe said the election helps build a Human Rights Council that responds more effectively to the needs of all countries, particularly developing nations.

Zambia’s membership is grounded in the conviction that human rights, good governance and the rule of law are fundamental to sustainable development and lasting peace. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
