PS urges sector players to actualise 24-hour economy

MINISTRY of Tourism Permanent Secretary Evans Muhanga has urged sector players to ensure the actualisation of the 24-hour economy.
Mr Muhanga says sister ministries like Commerce, Trade and Industry will be engaged on how best to implement the development.
He said the 24-hour economy policy will also require that labour laws are harmonised.
“So, it’s important that we actualise this policy direction.
This is why we wanted to test it in Livingstone, being our tourist capital.
“Actually, this move will help create jobs for young people who are looking for such opportunities,” Mr Muhanga said.
Speaking yesterday at the tourism technical working group meeting, organised by Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF), he said this declaration will also enhance economic activities in the tourism sector.
Mr Muhanga said private players in the tourism industry should work with Government to see how best security can be enhanced.
“As private sector, issues regarding security are important.
So, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security have to interpret what it means to have a 24-hour economy from the security point of view. With this, there are various things that we need to unpack at our various levels.”
He urged private players in the sector to submit views on how to improve the 24-hour policy.
Mr Muhanga thanked the private sector for contributing significantly to the increased number of tourist arrivals since the UPND took office in 2021.
“The tourists’ numbers that have taken a positive step comes from the push by the private sector. So, for me, I think we need to recognise the private sector as main player in pushing for these numbers,” he said. And Tourism Council of Zambia (TCZ) chairperson Glyden Mungaila has
