POLICE in Mambwe district yesterday stopped a public gathering at the residence of Patriotic Front (PF) presidential hopeful Makebi Zulu, citing security reasons.
The police also said they had not been informed prior about the gathering as required by law.
Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba said police dispersed between 250 and 300 people who had gathered at Mr Zulu’s residence around 09:00 hours yesterday in Mambwe district.
Mr Mweemba told journalists at a media briefing here yesterday, that the police got concerned after seeing huge numbers of people gathering at Mr Zulu’s residence Mambwe.
He said the officer in charge of Mambwe Police Station went to the house to engage Mr Zulu, who informed the officers that the people had visited his residence because he had been away for two years.
“When the officer in charge engaged Mr Makebi Zulu, he said that he had been out of the area for two years and he thought that was the right time to meet his people. We have no quarrel over that but then the multitude of people who went to his house was big, we got worried because people were trooping to his house in huge numbers,” Mr Mweemba said.
He said police are not stopping anyone from holding public gatherings but the procedure to notify them should be followed to ensure security is not compromised.
Mr Mweemba said the officer asked the people to disperse for security reasons because the crowd was big….https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
