- Seizes over 1,800 tons of illegal drugs in 2025

THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says it recorded an all-time high seizure of more than 1,800 tons of illegal and controlled drugs in countrywide operations last year.Notable seizures included 13,156.87kg of cannabis, 1,870,937.20kg of cannabis plants, 997.86kg of cannabis seeds, 474.8kg of miraa, 2.97kg of benylin with codeine and 648.6 grams of cocaine.
DEC director general Nason Banda said the seizures represent an aggregated increase of more than 4,000 percent between 2024 and 2025. In 2024, the commission seized just over 42,000kg of all forms of drugs.
Mr Banda said that since DEC’s establishment in 1989, the 2025 seizure is the highest.
