IN AN effort to cushion the power deficit, private players have intensified cooperation with Zesco to accelerate the development of additional electricity generation assets.
Recently, Zesco Limited signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Lufubu Power Company (LPC) to secure 163 megawatts (MW) of base load hydro power from a new plant in the water-rich Northern Province, valued at over US$800 million.
According to a statement issued by Zesco’s corporate affairs department, the project will significantly impact national energy security and economic growth, advancing President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of universal electricity access as soon as possible.
“The Lufubu hydro-power project arrives at a critical time when the Government is accelerating various solutions to bridge the energy deficit, eliminate load-shedding, and achieve 100 percent electricity access by 2030,” the statement reads.
