KITWE College of Nursing and Midwifery (KCNM) has run out of learning space to accommodate its 1,100 students.
The training facility is run by Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) and offers training in nursing and midwifery.
KCNM head of school Lillian Kaluba said the institution has four classrooms and two lecture theatres, which are inadequate for the number of students enrolled at the institution.
Ms Kaluba said the training institution needs additional classrooms and lecture theatres to respond to the high number of students who are at the school.
“We need help with expanding this institution so that we can have more classrooms to cater for the increase in the number of students enrolling at the school,” she said.
Ms Kaluba said this after the handover of two buses to the institution by Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Lawrence Mwanza in Kitwe yesterday.
Mr Mwanza called for more collaborations among stakeholders in helping to expand facilities at the school.
He also commended management at the hospital for saving over K2 million to buy the two buses.
KTH senior medical superintendent Chileshe Mboni said the institution used to face challenges in transporting students to other medical facilities for their practical training.
Dr Mboni said the problem prompted management to start saving money for the buses.
He also said efforts are being made to finish the construction of a skills laboratory at the institution.
Dr Mboni said the completion of the skills training will help to decongest the hospital laboratory, which is mostly occupied by the students.
