A JOINT team of Immigration and Zambia Police officers has arrested five people in connection with the recent apprehension, abduction and extortion of money from foreigners after asking them for immigration documentation.
The five suspects are Mailoni Mushala, Kelly Harold Czenry, Emmanuel Chileya, Henry Nyirenda, and Ignatius Chonto who were allegedly in possession of Immigration, police and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) identity cards.
The five have been charged with extortion, theft by public servant, forgery and utterly, obtaining money by false pretences and impersonation
This is according to a joint statement issued by Police public relations officer Charity Chanda and her Immigration counterpart Namati Nshinka.
“A Toyota Corona registration number ABF 7271, a pair of handcuffs, police beacon, a white shirt and cap similar to those of Immigration department uniform which were used in the commissioning of the crimes were also recovered from the suspects,” the statement reads in part.
The suspects also allegedly threatened the victims with false imprisonment by driving them near police stations or prisons to instil fear and force them to give in to their demands.
It states that the crimes are not by any means isolated incidents because a number of robberies, kidnappings and extortions in the same manner have taken place in Lusaka in the past few months.
Police and Immigration department have appealed to citizens, who may have been swindled in the same manner to come forward and identify the suspects.
The suspects are in police custody and the departments have appealed to citizens to be on the lookout for conmen masquerading as law enforcement officers.
