4 arrested over rail ‘sabotage’

TEDDY KUYELA, Lusaka
A TEAM of State police and Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) officers has arrested four people in Kafue district for allegedly stealing rail slippers worth K30,000.
The four suspects of Kafue’s Zambia Township Mtendere section were arrested on Thursday night during an operation.
Speaking in Kafue yesterday shortly after inspecting the recovered property, ZRL head of investigations for the central region Shadreck Kapotwe said the suspects are detained at Kafue Central Police Station.
“We have embarked on a rehabilitation programme but we are very disappointed that some people have already started vandalising our infrastructure.  As you can imagine, from Kafue to Shimabala, some people have removed about 150 pandrol clips from the rail line.
“These people are also removing fish plates, base plates, coach screws, sole plates and spring washers. The thefts are delaying our rehabilitation programme,” Mr Kapotwe said.
Mr Kapotwe said ZRL is concerned about rampant theft of rail infrastructure and warned those found vandalising or stealing ZRL property will face the wrath of the law.
“We are asking our people where the rail line passes to please work with us so that we can avoid vandalism of rail infrastructure in the country,” Mr Kapotwe said.
