300 miners escape suffocation

OVER 300 miners at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) Mindola North-Shaft in Kitwe on Monday escaped suffocation after a loader hit an electric cable and sparked fire while they were working underground.
Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) general secretary Joseph Chewe and Copperbelt commissioner of police Charity Katanga confirmed this in separate interviews in Kitwe yesterday.
Mr Chewe said the incident, in which 302 miners almost suffocated, happened around 10:00 hours.READ MORE
