3 deaths trigger riots at Kabompo school

PUPILS at Kabompo Secondary School have rioted and destroyed property after three of their colleagues died in a space of 10 days, district administrative officer Hendrix Solochi has said.
Mr Solochi said in an interview yesterday that the latest death of the third pupil sparked riots on Friday around 19:00 hours.
Mr Solochi said the first pupil died on June 20, 2015, the second one died on June 29, 2015 while the latest death occurred on June 30.
“What had happened was that we had some deaths at the school where on June 20, one pupil died of an unknown illness and later on June 29 another pupil died while the third one died on June 30.
“Because of such occurrences, the pupils reacted and rioted, destroying several window panes at the school,” Mr Solochi said.
He said the pupils engaged police in skirmishes and shattered windows of the administration block, two hostels and several classroom blocks.
Mr Solochi, however, said no pupil was arrested in the fracas because they all fled the school.
Results of a postmortem conducted on the pupil who died on June 30 indicate that the cause of death is meningitis.
Mr Solochi also said Government has deployed a team of health workers to Kabompo Secondary School to carry out a thorough investigation into the deaths.
The district administration has recommended that  Kabompo Secondary School should temporarily close to allow health experts to conclude their investigations.
