GOVERNMENT says governance and internal audit professionals can no longer operate in isolation, given the complex challenges institutions face that require integrated leadership, shared accountability, and co-ordinated action.
Ministry of Information and Media permanent secretary Thabo Kawana said the two professions should break down institutional silos and uphold integrity and collaboration in their daily work.
He said sustainable economic growth depends on institutions being efficient, transparent and responsive while good governance is the essential mechanism through which institutions build trust with citizens.
Mr Kawana said strong governance is critical to ensuring transparency, the accurate flow of information, and consistent accountability, particularly as public institutions face rapidly changing demands.
He said this in Livingstone yesterday at the first joint governance forum and annual audit conference, which runs through Friday.
“Good governance is not merely a compliance exercise. It is the mechanism through which we build trust between institutions and citizens,” Mr Kawana said.
Addressing internal auditors, he observed that their role has evolved from merely reviewing transactions to acting as strategic advisers who help institutions anticipate risks, strengthen internal controls, and create value.
Mr Kawana highlighted that Government has placed transformation, accountability, and economic growth at the centre of the national development agenda through the vision of Grow Zambia Agenda.
“Growth does not happen by accident. Investment does not flow where governance is weak. Development does not flourish where accountability is absent.”
He urged auditors to remain agile and adapt to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), which is transforming governance, compliance, and assurance systems. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
