THE Vivo Energy Zambia have revamped the Chibolya football grounds, creating an upgraded field through the firm’s Score for Change initiative, as part of the company’s commitment to empowering local communities through sport and youth development initiatives.
Managing Director Edward Walugembe said the modernised works reflect the company’s dedication to creating lasting positive impact through sport and youth empowerment.
Youth teams under the Chibolya Sports academy held a soccer tournament to kick off the refurbished football grounds.
Mr Walugembe said the successful completion of the modernisation works would not have been possible without the active involvement and commitment of the local community,
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts, Chileshe Kangwa commended VIVO Energy for investing in the sports academy, saying such an environment will be condusive for youths to foster their sports talent.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony, Mr Chileshe said the facility is more than just a football ground, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of young people and the community.
“We are all familiar with the vices that affect young people in Chibolya and you choosing to bring such a platform like this creates an opportunity for the young people to find an opportunity to improve on their talent,” he said.
And 2012 Africa Cup of Nations-winning captain Christopher Katongo welcomed the initiative, describing it as a valuable investment in grassroots sports development.
Katongo said projects such as the Chibolya Grounds modernisation are essential for identifying, nurturing and developing sporting talent at community level, while inspiring young people to pursue their dreams through sport.
“As a former footballer, I see that there is a lot of talent here, and creating this opportunity will open up for the young people,” he said.
The real success of this project will be the impact it creates for the community. We’re proud to support a space where talent can thrive and communities can come together.
