VARIOUS stakeholders have welcomed Government’s decision to zero-rate value added tax (VAT) and suspend excise duty on diesel and petrol for three months as this will lessen the impact of the oil crisis arising from the Middle East war.
On Tuesday, Government declared the current fuel supply situation in the country an emergency.
And to cushion households, businesses and key productive sectors from the adverse effects of the rising fuel costs, Cabinet approved the zero-rating of VAT and suspension of excise duty on petrol and diesel effective yesterday.
Consumer Unity and Trust Society consumer welfare officer Victor Sikombe said in an interview yesterday that in the immediate term, the move is likely to stabilise or reduce fuel pump prices.
