PARAMOUNT Chief Chitimukulu says Government’s swift response to floods ravaging parts of Northern Province is a demonstration of its commitment to safeguarding lives and supporting vulnerable communities in times of crises.
Floods in northern Zambia, particularly in areas like Mungwi, have recently caused widespread destruction, resulting in hundreds of homes collapsing, damage to agriculture and vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
The Chitimukulu said the timely intervention has provided relief and hope to displaced families, many of whom have been affected by recurring floods in the province.
The traditional leader was speaking when Vice-President Mutale Nalumango paid a courtesy call on him at his palace during a tour of flood-affected areas in the province.
The Chitimukulu said timely intervention is critical to prevent the suffering of people and ensure that families have access to basic necessities such as food.“It is encouraging to see Government taking action to restore order and provide support to displaced people and those in need,” he said.
The traditional leader urged relevant authorities to devise lasting solutions to prevent perennial flooding, as many residents continue to live in high-risk areas due to their dependence on fishing for survival.
And Mrs Nalumango said districts such as Mungwi, Chilubi and Kaputa have been significantly affected by floods, with only Lunte and Mporokoso largely spared.“We are here to assess the flooding situation affectingMungwi District and several others in the province. I came to assure our people that Government will not stand by, but will support all citizens affected by floods,” she said.
Mrs Nalamango said the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) is actively conducting assessments in affected areas to determine the extent of the situation and facilitate timely provision of relief support to vulnerable communities. She reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that relief support reaches all affected families.
Mrs Nalumango said the flooding situation in Mungwi District is severe, and that extensive damage to farmland, homes and infrastructure can threaten household food security.
And speaking at Kasama Airport after an aerial assessment of the Chambeshi River basin, Mrs Nalumango said the floods have gone beyond usual patterns, affecting even communities far from the river….https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
